James M. Hill started a small factory to tip shoestrings, on his family's farm in Coventry RI. It must have been after 1863, when he received two patents for processes related to tipping shoestrings. While living in Providence, he also invented machinery including a Japanning oven and a wick making machine. James was the son of Allen R. Hill and Dorcas Matteson. He married Rhoda Lemira Woodward. His son, James H. Hill, followed in the business. Does anyone know about this factory or family?

The shoestring factory was located in Coventry Center at the Intersection of Rt 117 and Old Rt 117. It burned many years ago. A small portion of the mill still stands where they are still manufacturing denim material and making jeans. Hill is an old name in Coventry so I am sure you will find plenty of info. Good luck. Alice

Thank you Alice, for your message. Do you know anything about Allen R. Hill who was the father of James M. Hill of the shoestring factory? Allen married Dorcas Matteson of Moses and Pruda. Allen was b. Exeter c. 1793 and Dorcas was b. Coventry c. 1799. I have Allen R. Hill's parents as William and Lydia. Do you know Lydia's maiden name or if they had any other children?
Allen and Dorcas had at least these children: James M., William, George Bowen, Reuben (my line), Alexander, Allen R., and Mary Elizabeth (who married Benjamin Greene).
Thanks for any info. I think I have some Gorton's and Andrews in there somewhere. I am going on a trip and when I come back I will be in touch. Nancy

Hi Nancy,
I do know of the factory that you are inquiring about it still stands it was moved to Hill Farm Camp Rd. and is now the business of Standish Heating and Air Co. The Hill's sold it to Standish in the 60's, it was sold to them by Daisy Hill whom has a son James whom lives directly across from the old mill.
Hill Farm Rd is one of the road that intersect in Coventry Center. I do have some access to census of Coventry let me know if I can help. Heidi
