Difference between "Jas" and "James"

Classification: Query
Surnames: Jas versus James (first names)
My Great Grandfather's name in Australia was James Anderson and I have had trouble researching further back than him as the family story states his parents died in a ship wreck moving back from New Zealand to Australia, but he had been sent back before them so he was not on the ship, but as he was a child, he did not have much information on his family. His Birth Index lists him as "James", but his Marriage & Death Index list "Jas" I assumed this was interchangeable for James. However when researching his father, who we think was also a James, I am finding some documents with James, some with Jas and some with John. Is the John definitely someone else? Also I came across a ships log that lists a James Anderson and then a few lines further down it lists a "Jas" xxx which would make me think James and Jas are not the same first name??? can someone clarify?? The time frame is 1850's- 1880's and in Scotland, New Zealand and Australia.
