Viewing the 1880 census of my ancestor John Winchester of Belair, Maryland, I noticed that most everyone, and their parents, were born in MD, written plain old "Md." However, on his entry alone, the birthplaces of his parents are in parentheses "(Md.)"
It must indicate something, but what, I am not sure. The first thing that jumps to mind is that perhaps he was an orphan. Or perhaps the person giving the information wasn't sure where his parents were born, but believed it to be Maryland.
I haven't seen this before. Has anyone else? Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
