Hi All, I am trying to unravel something which may be a mystery.
I have Harriet's death certificate (1891) on which her father's occupation is recorded as Master Tailor (deceased). There is a note written on the edge of the certificate saying "For Tailor read Fruiterer..." written by the registrar on the same day as the certificate on production of a stat dec.
As far as we know he was a fruiterer (family story) but there is almost no documentary evidence that he was and I can find no evidence of him or his wife at all after the birth of his daughters. Both daughters are living away from them in the censuses.
There is however more evidence of a master tailor of the same name, dob, wife etc., someone who we came across while investigating but dismissed because it seemed unlikely that it was the same person.
I was very surprised when I found this note as it fuels the view that it might be the same person and am now wondering why the death certificate was changed in this way? Does anyone have any ideas?
