Shipping News in newspapers 1800-1840

I've been researching old newspapers for mention of my husband's ancestor, who was a ship captain from about 1800-1840.

In the old shipping news columns, they divide the news into categories: arrived, cleared, and below. Arrived is obvious, cleared apparently means departed, but I'm drawing a complete blank about what "below" means. Anyone out there have an explanation for a landlubber?

thanks, Ardie
