I have been on the search of my biological father for a bit over a decade now. I had never knew much about him except for what is on my birth certificate, and a divorce decree that i found in my mother's personal belongings (because i got nosey). My mother refuses to tell me much about him. so i don't have much to go off of. i have done a DNA test that is posted here on ancestry... and i have no information of the name FORD anywhere. so here is what i do know 100%:

According to my birth certificate his name is Robert Ray Ford. he was 26 years old on Jan 3rd 1983. i was born in Ft Polk in Leesville Louisiana in the Vernon county. it says he is from Smithfield Illinois. He was married to my mother who held the name of Barbara Anne Cope Ford. My mother filed for divorce around 2 or 3 months before i was born, in October of 1982, but oddly enough, it was filed in a different state and city from where i was born. the decree was granted a full divorce on july 14th 1983, 6 months after i was born.

Now, the hard part that i have been wrapping my brain around for the past several months. after taking the time to look at my dna matches on the site, i have confirmed several of my mothers side of the family members on here. my mother's sister took a test, and i tend to see if there are or are not matching relatives. i have realized that i am looking at a lot of people who i am figuring are on my biological father's side. my mother refuses to take the test that i bought her for christmas. she also refuses to give me any kind of details about my biological father. it's like pulling teeth with her when i try. the only thing i managed in the past couple of months was to find out that he was in the military (as was my mother). my maternal grandmother, my only living grandparent, has said she never met my father and barely knew any information about him. that the only grandparent that did meet him was my grandfather in a short stint, but he passed away 28 years ago. since i have shown my grandmother the work that i have done on here with my family tree, she feels i deserve the right to know who my father is, and if i have younger siblings or not.

but the hard part is, all the dna names that match are not FORD. a huge name factor that comes in is the name TROUPE. i was in contact with someone who is from that family name, we shared some pictures and i learned i carry a lot of the facial features that run in her family. at this point... i am convinced that my father may have been given up for adoption, and was adopted with the name that i have.

so, my questions become these.... do i start asking the person i have been in contact with if she can find out if someone gave up a son around what i think is the year of my fathers birth which may be either 1956 or 1957 (ish)? is there a way to find out a persons military information without having the fold3? i dont know if he served in any wars past 1990 or not.
