English (Durham): habitational name and occupational name; for someone who lived or worked at a ‘barkhouse’ i.e. a tannery or (more specifically) a building by a tannery where the bark of oak trees (or certain other trees) was stored for use in tanning leather. From ancient times throughout the Middle Ages and up to the present day leather has been processed with tree bark to make it softer more durable and waterproof.
