English and Scottish: from Middle English crabbe Old English crabba ‘crab’ (the crustacean) a nickname for someone with a peculiar gait or as in German and East Frisian for an awkward or fractious person. Later by association with the tart crab apple (Middle English crab(be)) it was used to denote a sour-tempered person. Americanized form of German Dutch and Danish Krabbe .
