Compare also Demarce Demars 1 and Dumay French: habitational name with fused preposition de ‘from’ denoting someone from either of two places in France named Mers Mers-les-Bains (Somme) or Mers-sur-Indre (Indre). English: variant of Deamer with post-medieval excrescent -s.
