East Frisian North German and Dutch (Groningen): genitivized patronymic from the personal name Ede or Edo. German: habitational name from any of several places mainly in Bavaria and Austria so named from Middle High German œde ‘wasteland’ + the dative suffix -n. Dutch: variant without the preposition van ‘from’ of Van Eden .
