The Durham placename derives from Old English heorot ‘hart stag’ + dūn ‘hill’ while the North Yorkshire placename may arise from Old English here ‘army’ + tūn ‘farmstead estate’. The etymology of the Shropshire placename remains uncertain. Irish (Cavan): variant of Hartin .
