Scottish and English: from northern Middle English and Older Scots halh haugh ‘a piece of flat alluvial land by the side of a river typically one deposited in a bend’ also ‘river-meadow land’; either topographic for someone who lived near such a feature or habitational for someone who came from one of several places in Scotland and northern England called Haugh. English: possibly a variant of Hough .
