In part this is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar ). The surname of German origin is also found in France (Alsace) Hungary Czechia and Slovenia. German (Hütter): topographic name from Middle High German hütte ‘hut’. Dutch and German: occupational name for someone who works in a glass or iron foundry in a hut or Hütte. English (Middlesex): perhaps a variant of Hotter an occupational name for a basket maker from Middle English hottere; the same term also referred to someone who carried baskets of sand for making mortar. Alternatively it may have denoted someone who lived in a hut or shed from a derivative of Middle English hotte hutte ‘hut shed’.
