The Lancashire placename derives from Romano-British mamma ‘breast breast-shaped hill’ + Old English ceaster ‘city Roman fortification’. The Warwickshire placename derives perhaps from British mandu- ‘small horse pony’ + essedo- ‘chariot’ + Old English ceaster.
