Sellick Family History
Sellick Name Meaning
English: habitational name from Sellake in Halberton or Sellick in Clawton (both Devon) and occasionally also from Sellack (Herefordshire) recorded as Lann Suluc in a 12th century copy of a document from the late 9th century. Sellake in Halberton probably derives from Old English sǣge ‘swampy slow moving’ + lacu ‘stream’; the origin of the other Devon placename cannot be certain due to a lack of medieval forms but it appears to also have Old English lacu as a final element. The Herefordshire placename means ‘Suluc's church’ from the Christian saint's name Suluc (a pet form of Suliau or Tysilio) with Welsh llan ‘church’.
