French: from a learned variant of Old French pareis ‘Paradise’ (from Greek paradeisos; see below and Paradise ). As a toponym this was applied to verdant places and it is quite common as a placename in Nord and Normandy; the surname therefore can be a topographic or habitational name. Compare Paradee Paradise and Parady . In some cases also an American shortened form of any of various Greek surnames derived from a personal name based on classical Greek paradeisos ‘paradise pleasure garden’ (see Paradise ).
