A Riddel family household of at least 8 members residing in the district of Argenteuil was recorded in 1901. The head of household, William Riddel, was born in "Ireland" in 1823. Identifying his heritage as Scotch, William immigrated to Canada 56 years prior in 1845 when he was 22 years old. By 1901, at the age of 78, he had an occupation that was recorded as "Farmer". William's wife was Mary A Riddel, who was 68 years old. Mary was born in Quebec in 1833. She identified her heritage as Irish. William and Mary had 6 children, a boy and 5 girls. In 1863 their eldest child, a girl named Annie, was born. Three years later, in 1866, when William was 43 years old and Mary was 33 years old their second child, this time a son, who was named Hugh, was born. Then, in 1868, with their two children ages 5 years and 2 years, their third child, Sarah, was born. In 1901 another daughter, their fourth child and third girl, Elizd, was born. With four other children in the household, their fifth child and fourth girl, Maggie, was born in 1874. She was followed by 1 more child: their daughter Jane, born in 1876. Thus, at the time of the 1901 census, this Riddel family household was filled with 6 children whose ages were 24, 26, 30, 32, 34, and 37 years.
