He identified his heritage as Irish. By 1901, at the age of 43, he had an occupation that was recorded as "Farmer". William's wife was Ester Westgate, who was 46 years old. Ester was born in Quebec in 1855. She also identified her heritage as Irish. William and Ester had 5 children, 2 boys and 3 girls. In 1881 their eldest child, a girl named Elizabeth, was born. Two years later, in 1883, when William was 25 years old and Ester was 28 years old their second daughter, who was named Agness, was born. Then, in 1885, with their two older daughters ages 4 years and 2 years, their third daughter, Harriet, was born. William and Ester's first son was born in 1887 and was named Freddy. With four other children in the household, their fifth child and second boy, Rudolph, was born in 1893. Thus, at the time of the 1901 census, this Westgate family household was filled with 5 children whose ages were 8, 14, 16, 18, and 20 years.
