A Martell family household of at least 10 members residing in the district of Cape Breton was recorded in 1901. The head of household, John Martell, was born in Nova Scotia in 1865. He identified his heritage as French. By 1901, at the age of 35, he had an occupation that was recorded as "Fisher". John's wife was Ida Martell, who was 34 years old. Ida was born in Nova Scotia in 1866. She identified her heritage as English. John and Ida had 8 children, 4 boys and 4 girls. In 1888 their eldest child, a girl named Nina, was born. That same year1888, when John was 23 years old and Ida was 22 years old their second child, this time a son, who was named Levtt, was born. Then, in 1891, with their two children ages 3 years and 3 years, their third child, Susan, was born. In 1901 another daughter, their fourth child and third girl, Ruth, was born. With four other children in the household, their fifth child and second boy, John, was born in 1894. He was followed by 3 more children: their daughter Ada, born in 1895; their son George, born in 1897; and their son Melvin, born in 1900. Thus, at the time of the 1901 census, this Martell family household was filled with 8 children whose ages were 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 12, and 13 years.
