Joanna was born in Nova Scotia in 1862. She also identified her heritage as German. Charles and Joanna had 2 children, a boy and a girl. In 1897 their eldest child, a girl named Marguett, was born. Two years later, in 1899, when Charles was 35 years old and Joanna was 37 years old their second child, this time a son, who was named Karl, was born.
