He identified his heritage as Scotch. By 1901, at the age of 95, he had an occupation that was recorded as "Farmer". Donald's wife was Rachael McIssac, who was 70 years old. Rachael was born in Nova Scotia in 1831. She also identified her heritage as Scotch. Donald and Rachael had 2 children, a boy and a girl. In 1863 their eldest child, a girl named Mary, was born. Eight years later, in 1871, when Donald was 65 years old and Rachael was 40 years old their second child, this time a son, who was named Kanneth, was born.
