Susie was born in Nova Scotia in 1836. She also identified her heritage as English. Marshall and Susie had 5 children, 2 boys and 3 girls. In 1869 their eldest child, a girl named Elsie, was born. Four years later, in 1873, when Marshall was 39 years old and Susie was 37 years old their second child, this time a son, who was named Ernest, was born. Then, in 1875, with their two children ages 6 years and 2 years, their third child, Maud, was born. In 1901 another daughter, their fourth child and third girl, Bessie, was born. With four other children in the household, their fifth child and second boy, Reuben, was born in 1879. Thus, at the time of the 1901 census, this Coldwell family household was filled with 5 children whose ages were 21, 22, 25, 27, and 32 years.
