A McNiel family household of at least 9 members residing in the district of Victoria (Nova Scotia) was recorded in 1901. The head of household, Lauchlin McNiel, was born in Nova Scotia in 1841. He identified his heritage as Scotch. By 1901, at the age of 60, he had an occupation that was recorded as "Farmer". Lauchlin's wife was Ann McNiel, who was 53 years old. Ann was born in Nova Scotia in 1847. She also identified her heritage as Scotch. Lauchlin and Ann had 7 children, 6 boys and a girl. In 1876 their eldest child, a boy named Murdoch, was born. One year later, in 1877, when Lauchlin was 36 years old and Ann was 30 years old their second son, who was named Angus, was born. Then, in 1879, with their two older sons ages 3 years and 2 years, their third son, Neil, was born. In 1901 another son, their fourth child, James, was born. Lauchlin and Ann's first daughter was born in 1885 and was named Barbar. . She was followed by 2 more children: their son Daniel, born in 1886; and their son Murdoch, born in 1890. Thus, at the time of the 1901 census, this McNiel family household was filled with 7 children whose ages were 11, 14, 16, 18, 21, 23, and 24 years.
