probably from the old manor of Baikie in Angus (Beaqui in 1565) and transferred to Orkney (Black). Marwick records the Orkney place-name as Beaqui in 1492 Beaquoy in 1500 and if Blackis right it has been assimilated to local Orkney names in Old Norse kví ‘(cattle) fold’. The Angus name is recorded in capella de Baky 1363 in Great Seal of Scotland i no. 99. The place-name may be from Scots Gaelic bac ‘hindrance; bend in the ground’ from a well-marked local feature of the local burn.
