English (Staffordshire): from the medieval northern English personal name Kouse Kause corresponding to Old Norse Kausi a nickname meaning ‘tomcat’. Alternatively a variant of Cosh a topographic name from Middle English cosche coush coyse ‘small cottage hut hovel’. Possibly an Americanized form of German Kaus or Ku(h)se the latter being unexplained.
