The place-names derive from Old English fox ‘fox’ + tūn ‘farmstead estate’. from Foxton in Sedgefield (Durham) which is recorded as Foxedene in about 1170 or Foxton in Alwinton (Northumb) recorded as Foxden in 132 The place-names derive from Old English fox ‘fox’ + denu ‘valley’.
