English (southern): from either of two distinct personal names which became confused in Middle English: ancient Germanic Ger(r)am (Gerrannus) composed of the ancient Germanic elements gār gēr ‘spear’ + hraban ‘raven’ and Latin Hieronymus which is the source of English Jerome and French Jérôme (see 1 above).
