French Canadian (Maillé): altered form of Breton Maguet from maget ‘nourished’ used as a nickname for a child found and raised by a nurse. French: from maille the name of a small coin and by extension a feudal levy of this amount hence possibly a nickname for someone who paid or collected this tax. French: from mail ‘blacksmith's hammer’ hence a metonymic occupational name for someone who worked with such an implement.
