This placename derives from Old English (æt) aldan tūn ‘(at) the old farmstead’ or may derive from the Old English personal name Alda (perhaps in the genitive Aldan or with Old English connective -ing-) + tūn ‘farmstead settlement’. There are other places called Oulton in Yorkshire Cumbria Staffordshire Norfolk and Suffolk all with different etymological origins and most of which gave rise to the surname Oulton and its variants such as Olton and Outen .
