Quibell Family History

Quibell Name Meaning

English (north-west Nottinghamshire and south Yorkshire): nickname probably from Middle English whit(e) ‘white’ + belt ‘belt girdle sash’ presumably for someone who was distinguished by his wearing of a white sash. The change of Whitbelt to Quibell (perhaps in the 15th or 16th century) would be through northern dialectal over-aspiration of Wh- i.e. /hw/ as Qu- i.e. /kw/ and loss of /t/ in the consonant clusters /bt/ and /lt/.
