Slovenian and Croatian: probably a nickname derived from rud ‘red reddish’ or alternatively from rud ‘curly’ (standard Slovenian rod) + -man ‘man’ a suffix of German origin. Alternatively from the ancient Germanic personal name Hrodman Ruodman (see Rodeman and 1 above). Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): metronymic from the Yiddish female personal name Rude (variant of Rode used in Poland and Ukraine; see Rodman ) + Yiddish man ‘man’ in the sense ‘husband’.
