from Sandholme in Garstang (Lancs) for which there are no early records or less likely Sandholme in Gilberdyke (ER Yorks) or Sandholme in Beverley (ER Yorks) both of which are recorded as Sandholm in the 14th century and derive from Old English sand or Old Scandinavian sandr ‘sand’ + Old Scandinavian holmr ‘small island water meadow’.from Sandown (IoW) which is recorded as Sandome in 1204 and Sandham in 127 The place-name derives from Old English sand ‘sand’ + hamm ‘enclosure water meadow’.
