English and Scottish: nickname perhaps for a small person from Middle English sprot sprat (Old English sprott) ‘small species of herring sprat’. It may also have been used as a personal name. English and Scottish: nickname perhaps for a small thin person from Middle English sprote sprotte (Old English sprota sprot) ‘shoot twig rod’. It is an alternative source of the Old English and early Middle English personal name Sprot (see above). It gave rise to Sprott and Sproat and was more or less synonymous with Middle English sprout ‘(new) shoot of a plant bud’. German: probably a habitational name from any of the places called Sprotte (Westphalia Saxony-Anhalt) Sprotta (Silesia).
