The earliest bearer known seems to have a very late appearing surname since Stirton in Fife (or its name) came into existence only in the mid 17th century commemorating a family called Stirk holding land adjacent with Scots toun ‘farmstead settlement’. English: variant of Sturton a habitational name from Sturton le Steeple (Nottinghamshire) Great Sturton (Lincolnshire) Sturton by Stow (Lincolnshire) or possibly Sturton (Northumberland) all of which share the same etymology and early spellings as Stratton .
