The first was named in Old English as ‘farmstead (Old English tūn) of the family or followers (-inga-) of a man called Winter’. Winterton-on-Sea in Norfolk is from Old English winter ‘winter’ + tūn ‘enclosure settlement’ perhaps denoting a place inhabited only in winter.
