Japanese: found mostly in western Japan, where it is written with the characters for the former province of Aki (now part of Hiroshima prefecture). The name is written with the character for ‘autumn’ in the Ryukyu Islands. Some instances in America could be the result of shortening other Japanese names beginning with aki, for example Akiyama.
