Italian (Campania): from an early Christian female personal name, Greek Amaranthe ‘unfading’, bestowed with reference to the adjective amarantos as used in I Peter 5:4: ‘And when the chief shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away’. The personal name was sometimes wrongly taken as a derivative of anthos ‘flower’.
