German: habitational name from any of several settlements called Amberg (literally ‘by the mountain’) including a city in Bavaria. It could also be a topographic name of identical etymology. Jewish (Ashkenazic): possibly from 1; alternatively it may be a habitational name from the city of Hamburg (see Hamburger ). Many varieties of Yiddish lack h and -burg is sometimes replaced by -berg in Jewish surnames.
