Maltese and Italian: ethnic name for a person of African descent or occupational name for a mercenary soldier from medieval Greek atsoupas plural atsoupades a term that originally denoted a mercenary soldier but later outside Greece also ‘black person person from Mauritania’. The name was apparently influenced by the common Germanic name element (h)ard ‘hardy brave strong’. As an Italian surname it is very rare originating from Sicily where it is found in the spellings Azzupardi and Azzuppardi.
