French (northern) and Portuguese (of French origin; mainly Azores): habitational name from any of various places in northern France so called with minor variations in spelling of which the main one is in Somme. They are named with the ancient Germanic personal name Betto an assimilated form of Berto (see Bert ) + Old French court ‘farm(yard)’.
