Boat Name Meaning

Origin uncertain. The surname is recorded in England in the 1881 English census and may be of English origin, a metonymic occupational name for a boatman or boat builder, from Middle English bot(e) ‘boat’. However, in part at least, it is an Americanized form of some other name, most probably Dutch and North German Boot.
