Variant of Irish Breslin. Altered spelling of Swiss and South German Brüstlin, from a diminutive of Middle High German brust ‘chest’, ‘breast’ (see Brust). Americanized form of South German Brüslin, a nickname for a poor person, from an old dialect word Brüslin ‘crumb’.
