Catalan or Asturian-Leonese: probably a topographic from a diminutive of card ‘thistle’ (Latin cardus), or, less likely, a habitational name from a place so named in Asturies. Possibly an altered form of Italian Cardelli or Cardello. Perhaps an Americanized spelling of German Kardel (see Kardell).
