Italian: from castello ‘castle’, ‘fortified building’ (from Late Latin castellum), applied as a topographic name, a habitational name from any of numerous places so named or named with this word, or a metonymic occupational name for a servant who lived and worked in such a place. Catalan (Castelló): habitational name from any of the places named Castelló or with that word, as for example Castelló de la Plana, one of the main towns in Valencia, or Castelló d’Empúries, a town in the Catalan district of L’Empordà.
