Cogdell Name Meaning

English (Buckinghamshire): habitational name from Coquetdale (Northumberland) which is earlier recorded as Choketdale. The district name derives from the name of the river Coquet + Middle English dale ‘dale valley’. The river name itself which is first recorded as Coccuveda probably means ‘the red one’ from British cocco- ‘red’ + the ancestor of Welsh gwedd ‘aspect appearance’ as in Welsh cochwedd ‘redness’.
