English (northern): occupational name from Anglo-Norman French cornier ‘hornblower’ (Old French corneor). Alternatively a variant of Crowner a topographic name for someone who lived on a corner (from Middle English corner ‘angle corner; place where two streets meet’) or in Lancashire a variant of Corney . This name was taken to Ireland whence it later migrated back across the water to the industrial towns of Scotland and England. Americanized form of German Körner (see Koerner ) or Swiss German Korner .
