German: probably an Americanized spelling of German Kude (see Cude) or Kuder, a metonymic occupational name of Slavic origin for a person who prepared tow (flax or hemp broken down into fibers for spinning). Slovenian (Cuda): nickname for an odd fellow, from cuden ‘strange’, ‘odd’.
