Dutch and North German: patronymic from the Germanic personal name Duno. Dutch: shortened form of Van Duin, a variant of Van Duyne. Dutch and North German: Dutch spelling of a topographic name for someone who settled near or in dunes, from Middle Dutch dune, duun. The German word Düne came as a loan word from Dutch in the 17th century, which explains the Dutch spelling of the German name.
