German: from a short form of any of various ancient Germanic compound personal names with the first element agi(n) agil ‘point edge (of a sword)’ akin to the word in 1 above. This surname (in both senses; see 1 above) is also found in France (Alsace and Lorraine). Swedish and Norwegian: variant of Ek .
