English: habitational name from North or South Elkington in Lincolnshire, so named from an Old English personal name (possibly Ea(n)lac) + Old English tun ‘enclosure’, ‘settlement’. Elkington in Northamptonshire is not the source of the family name: it did not acquire the name until 1617, before which it was Eltington or Elteton.
